The Head Stock

The head stock can be found at the top of the guitar. Its purpose is to stock the machine heads. The manufacturers logo can be found here too. They vary in design, some cut through the headstock to fit the tuning pegs and some are just a solid rectangle shape.

Tuner Heads

These can be found on the Headstock. They are used to hold the strings tightly in place and with a turn in either direction can tune your guitar to the required note. They can come in various designs and dynamics but they all have the same purpose - Tuning.

The Nut

The Nut is the small piece of material that supports the strings at the base of the headstock. The nut have vertical lines that sets the spacing of the strings equally across the neck of the guitar and holds the strings at the correct height from the fingerboard.

Fret Board

The Fret Board is the long thin strip of wood that runs from the headstock down and past the body of the guitar. A Classical guitar will have a flat fingerboard, an acoustic will have a slight bezel to it and an electric guitar has a highly lacquered finish to it.

The Frets

Frets are the metal strips that cross the Fret board, their purpose is to add different pitches to any string once it is played. Pushing down between any two frets is the correct way to play and this is called fretting (visit the Frets lesson for more information).

The Bridge

The Bridge can always be found below the sound hole on an acoustic guitar, or below the pick ups, on an electric guitar. It's purpose is to fix the strings in place. You will only interact with this when restringing your guitar (visit the strings lesson for more information).

Playing the guitar is really healthy, it can help to manage your stress, enhance your memory, improve motor skills and will help you feel more able to cope with performing in life!
